A word of advice: Don’t leave your iPod dormant for long periods of time without keeping the music current, or the contents is like to rip your heart out and show it to you, or cause unexplainable mania and laughter that no one will understand because all of those people are elsewhere now. This song crept up on me without warning:
“Friend to Me” by Garth Brooks (Sevens, 1997)
Well you and I
We’re buddies
And we’ve been since we first met
Me and you
Well we’ve sure been through
Our share of laughter and regret
Lord knows we’ve had our bad days
And more than once we’ve disagreed
But you’ve always been a friend to me
You can be so stubborn
There’s times I think you just like to fight
And I hope and pray
I live to see a day
When you say I might be right
And there’s times I’d rather kill you
Than listen to your honesty
But you’ve always been a friend to me
You’ve always been
Time and again
The one to take my hand
And show to me it’s okay to be
Just the way I am
With no apology
Oh you’ve always been
And you will ’til God knows when
Yes you’ve always been a friend to me
I wanted to put a video of him singing this here, but I can’t seem to find a good quality example. This song mysteriously popped up between Frank Sinatra’s “One for the Road” — one of my absolute favorite songs ever– and “Hit ‘em Up” by Tupac. Yeah, I know… you wouldn’t believe my play list if I showed it to you.
On a particularly bad day I checked my answering machine to find this song, recorded in its entirety. Its meaning has never been lost on me.

About two years ago I started a StumbleUpon page that I, somehow, seem to have entirely forgot about. Last night I “stumbled” upon it again and recalled just how much I enjoyed using the site. I hadn’t posted for almost a year (I was three days shy before last night), and the last thing I collected was an image from a fellow Stumbler’s page. I don’t really believe in accidents or coincidence, and the image made me smile in that sad, knowing way. The image itself contains a list phrased better than I could sum up, so I’ll just let the image speak for me.

I’ve been reminiscing a lot since starting this “list a day” for NaBloPoMo. If you’re from Pittsburgh, you are likely familiar with the WQED show “Things That Aren’t There Anymore.” Many of those “things” don’t tug at my memory heart strings because I’m not 60 years old, though I can appreciate them. So what do I miss that once was “there” and is no longer, or is slowly disappearing?
