And So It Begins… Again…

Posted by: Dawn    in My Life, Updates

Welcome to a New Year, folks!  Hopefully this year lives up to last year, if not exceeds it, for me.  I know a lot of you are glad the year is over and that there is a fresh slate to play with, and I’ve heard more than one complaint about how wretched 2009 was to many, many friends and family members.  For that, I’m sorry.  I’m also sorry that I can’t share in that disgust with you.  any other year I would be leading the Thank [*insert deity here*] It’s A New Year Parade, but not this year.  I’ve had an amazing year, and I’m happier than I’ve ever been, so I’ll be pleased if I can just keep on the same set of tracks.  That doesn’t stop me from posting amusing cartoons about the holidays being over and a long year having just begun:

You live under a rock, don’t you?

If you haven’t had a chance to check out Garfield Minus Garfield yet (and if not, why not?  That rock you live under must be wonderfully entertaining!), you need to do so before you become completely culturally irrelevant.  No really… go.  You can also check out the book at a local retailer (totally worth it in my opinion).  And while you’re at it, you should check out the other phenomenon, FML.  This weekend Jack and I picked up the book while braving the insanity that was Arundel Mills Mall, and had more than a few laughs.  It’s not rocket science, and it’s not something I’d buy for my new e-reader (HA!  I totally have the best boyfriend in the world… more on that soon), but it’s definitely good,  mindless, “at least my life isn’t THAT bad” kind of fun.  You know.. reality TV kind of fun.  PostSecret kind of fun, but less deep.

Resolutions

I’m aware that most resolutions don’t ever stick, but I’ve done some pre-thinking and planning to hopefully ensure that I can hold myself to those resolutions:

  • I’ve quit smoking.  Again.

I started Chantix again before the holidays, and this time I’m excited to be free of it for good.  It’s not easy, and the medicine still gives me insane dreams (Y’all, I dreamed about a village of magical and mystical things, and where I watched one person shoot a baby bald eagle, and another trap a vulture.  This was followed by a series of blobs of color being chased by marbles.  I know it makes no sense, especially when you add to that the fact that snow crashed down on the back porch of one of these houses like a tidal wave, but that’s what happens when I take this medicine.  My 80’s “kids” movie inspired imagination has always been a huge problem when it comes to my dreams, and this medicine just amplifies them.  But I’m trying, and it’s going very, very well thus far.

  • I have 9 months to lose 30 pounds.

I’ve also set a goal of getting myself back in to shape before my youngest brother’s wedding in September.  That’s 9 months.  That’s plenty of time for me to lose the 25-30 lbs that mysteriously appeared on my body over the past year.  Honestly, losing 20 lbs would probably be my healthiest option, and working on getting my body toned again would help.  I’ve never done this before, so wish me luck.  I have Wii Steve to guide me on my attempt, and to humiliate me at every chance he gets (like saying “ouch” when I step on the Wii board…. bastard! ).  I’ll likely need your help in this one more than anything else.  See?  When you weren’t looking I just ate 5 sugar cookies!  No really… they were in the cafe at work for us… I have no will power.

  • I’m going to read more.

Coming from me that might sound odd, but I haven’t had a chance to read a fraction as much as I used to.  I haven’t had a chance to review much of anything, and I haven’t had a chance to even write criticism or commentary on book world news.  Contentment makes you lazy.  Well… it makes me lazy, at least.  But Jack gave me a Sony eReader for Christmas, and I’ve already finished a book on there, so hopefully it makes the transporting of my reading material less painful and clunky!  Have I mentioned how much I love that eReader?!

  • I’m going to blog more regularly again.

Check, and check.  I’m off to an okay start so far!  I considered NaBloPoMo to get me back in to things for January, but I’d like to try it just on my own.  I also have to start reading my RSS feeds again.  I opened Google Reader for the first time in months and the staggering numbers almost blinded me.  I’m so behind… but that’s going to change, y’all!  I’m back baby! I also have a million and a half comic book posts to write that have been lingering and gnawing at me every time I pick up a new issue!  Talk about fast paced writing and reading!  I love it, and it’s only right that I share that with you…

So there you have it, folks.  I hope your holidays were full of family and friends and love and laughter!

Missed you.  :)

Gifts of the Magi

Posted by: Dawn    in My Life, Shakespeare

Christmas took a lot out of me this year, and even though I tend to hate the holiday season the holidays themselves rarely end up being a colossal disappointment.  I’m pretty convinced that the reason for my holiday disgust has everything to do with the insane consumerism of the last three months of the year (Remember when it was only two?  One?  Yeah, this year there were Christmas decorations out next to the Halloween pumpkins. Not cool… and hey!  You missed an entire holiday in there!)

For various reasons this year I was unable to pour myself in to the delight of my wrapping extravaganza and decorate holiday gifts with wire ribbon, candy, and ornaments.  This actually disappoints me.  I love wrapping.  I loathe shopping, but I love, love, love the wrapping and giving parts!  And just when I thought that was something to be momentarily sad about, I was given three very special gifts this year that mean a lot to me.  There are three kinds of gift givers–those that just go throw down a card or cash and grab whatever they see without much thought about the gift or recipient, and those that take great care in knowing the person they want to give a gift to, who they are, what they like, and what is meaningful to them, and then there are those individuals who fall somewhere in between.  I was lucky enough to have people in my life this season who took great pains (or at least seemed to) to give me something I would love dearly.

My parents gave me, among other things, a Magellan, which might not be the most fuzzy gift in the world, but it is something I had been wanting and needing, but never explicitly mentioned.  It has come in quite useful since the holiday, and it will continue to be so.  I just wish that Magoo (as I have named it) had the option like the TomTom to change the voice yelling at you to “Go straight, then a diagonal right.”  What does that even mean!?  I found out, I assure you.

@DjLunchbox surprised me with something that shall remain on my desk until the polymers in the binding disintegrate.  Many of you know by now that I am a rabid Sandman fan, and that Neil Gaiman remains my favorite contemporary author (he shared that space in the past, but we all remember what happened there).  I opened my door to find The Quotable Sandman, a quarto sized book with favorite and famous quotes from the series and art from the various issues.  It’s magnificent and quite possibly prophetic…

And the BF shocked me with a stunning display of astuteness and thoughtfulness with the first digitized edition of Shakespeare’s First FolioIt’s Shakespeare.  It’s the First Folio… scanned…. and searchable…. on my computer… in Early Modern English… Even the water stains and printer errors and front-matter are there!  I was overwhelmed, honestly.  I wish I could upload a screenshot to show you just how amazing it is!  As Othello said, it was “too much joy.  It stops me here…”  I spent hours going through play after play, and essays, and just absorbing the fact that I can hops skip and jump around in the First Folio now whenever I want, as often as I want, without need for special clearance or permission, or fear of breathing on the parchment!

All three of these gifts might seem commonplace to you, but to me they mean the world, and each for a different reason.  So be aware that even though you may not have found anything special about the gift you gave someone, that gift might have made that person’s year.

I hope your holidays were joyous.  And I promise, we’ll be getting back to our regularly scheduled programming here (and also some new programming… muhahahaha!  Watch for it!) before you know it.

I Find Tinsel Distracting…

Posted by: Dawn    in Quickies, Social Commentary

Things have been quite busy ’round these parts, and there are some changes in the works, but I wanted to make sure and wish everyone a very Merry Holiday season.  I, for one, can’t wait to break out the Festivus Pole, the Feats of Strength, and the Airing of Grievances!

Friday 5: Last but not least…

Posted by: Dawn    in Friday 5, Pittsburgh, Sports, YinzTeam

Look for a RetConned Homework assignment for this week later today or tomorrow.  I miss the Homework and I know you do to.

Now, to the Friday 5!

1.  When did you last have a mid-day nap?  I do believe it was on Sunday.  The Thanksgiving holiday weekend was busy with family and friends (Don’t worry, there were naps involved, too), but by Sunday I was spent.

2.  When did you last have milk and cookies?   We discovered over the holiday, that I may or may not be lactose intolerant (well, cheese intolerance, really), so not recently.  I had a ton of cookies and delicious cookie dough while baking, but no milk, sadly.

3.  When did you last have a bubble bath?  That would be…. last Tuesday.  :)

4.  When did you last jump on the furniture?  I am assuming you mean jump on furniture like an overly rambunctious kid.  That would have to be…. when I was a kid…

5.  When did you last play in the mud?  Well, it was kinda muddy out on Saturday when we went to play in the Inaugural Yinz Team Flackle Football Turkey Bowl (The debate rages on whether it should be considered the 1st annual, or the inaugural.  As long as we do it again, I don’t much care!).  I managed to stay mud-less, but plenty of others were caught rolling around.  As always, hanging out with YinzTeam was a wonderful time (And thanks to UncleCrappy and Mrs. Crappy for the delish food and hospitality!!).

Oh, there will be more Yinz Team madness to come, I’m quite sure.  Someone really ought to create a website to document our insane exploits… Then again, maybe the fact that we all write about it anyway is unique…

A website could still be cool…. Just sayin’, yo…
