My Yearly SDCC Envy

SDCC ENVY

So, this week is the San Diego Comic Con, and I’m just about sick to my stomach that I didn’t go.  In years past, it never occurred to me to go, to be honest, so that was never really a big, big deal.  On top of that,  I can see #SDCC and #Comic-Con trending on Twitter, and a number of folks I’m connected to are there so I’m seeing their updates and becoming greener and greener with jealousy.  Add to that the fact that more than half the blogs I have in my reader are talking about SDCC, and you have a frustrating, Nerdy, voyeuristic experience.  And why wouldn’t it be?  You have the celebrities who always seem to accentuate an already incredible experience (Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Cameron Diaz, just for starters).  And then you have the minds and hands that fans world wide traveled to stand in line for and see.  Neil Gaiman is there.  Dave McKean is there. Gail Simone is there.  Warren Ellis is there.  Kevin Smith is there (but chances are I’ll see him again in Pittsburgh for one of his future film shoots).  Eliza Dushku is there.  Tim Burton is there unveiling Alice in Wonderland.  Screening bits of the film.  Johnny Depp is there.  I’m sorry… JOHNNY DEPP IS THERE… AT COMICON (Surprise!).  And I’m here in Baltimore…

I was upset that I missed Neil Gaiman’s announcement that he was writing the death of Batman last year in a two issue arc of “Whatever Happened to The Caped Crusader?” and slowly but surely News is trickling out about exciting developments and unveilings (JOHNNY DEPP!!! Ahem).  If you’re interested, there are some great resources to follow for updates of live blogs, feeds, and twitter streams:

Lev Grossman (one of the Nerd World writers for Time)

Jen Yamomoto From Rotten Tomatoes

@Comiccon on Twitter (there are plenty of great folks you’ll see Re-Tweeted so don’t be afraid to dig through names like @jeffcannata and @davechensky!)

There are plenty to choose from, and they’re from all reaches of industry: Comic Book Writers, artists, inkers, letterers, and editors; Film Directors, screenplay writers, actors, distribution; and publishers from all over.  I’m not even there and I’m on Comic Con overload!

One way or another, we’re going to San Diego next year for the Con, and whether that means getting flights almost a year ahead of time, or driving in a caravan across country, I’ll be there!
