The weirdest thing about this series is the character sketches floating around. The completely not cheesecake, totally adorable, sensibly dressed character sketches.

Either Marvel has no idea what target demographic they're trying to pull with this book, or they're trying for two very different audiences and it'll just make everyone mad or disappointed.

One of the many things I like about Adam Warren's "Empowered" is that it doesn't pretend *not* to be cheesecake.

@JacksonLewis -- I agree with the concept of not buying it unless you like it, but that still leaves the problem of conveying the message that outdated, stereotypical marketing is offensive and not at all what contemporary female readers want. They're going to make money from this one way or another, so I'm curious to see how many people take the position you are... and what effect it will have.

@rasager I agree completely! I think that's also why I'm so frustrated by this marketing scheme. It makes me wonder why targeting stories to a specific gender are necessary at all... I mean, do you really think the main titles (typically skewing male) are written by folks thinking, "Hey, let's add elements to this story that are specifically geared toward men/boys..." or are they just writing a good story based on the universe and characters and histories they developed? I like to think it's the latter, but I need to think more about that...

@Alexa -- Welcome! And, again, I think I agree with you both. In fact, I really like your idea of sending a letter to the writer and artists along with compensation, and sending a simmlar letter directly to Joe Quesada and Dan Buckley. I might do that very thing. If you do, please let me know how it goes and if you get a response...

I'm looking forward to reading all the responses to this first issue once it launches... should be a good time. :)

I agree with Jacksonlewis. Don't pay for it if you can help it. If you like the story, then do what I'm going to do-- send a nice crisp $20 to Roberto and Tonjic, along with a letter explaining that while you enjoy the story, you refuse to pay for a product whose marketing was offensive, because it sends the wrong message that the marketing was acceptable. Send a similar letter to Joe Quesada and Dan Buckley (and whoever is in charge of marketing over there, if anyone is)

Let's hope they're just marketing it poorly.

With the growing popularity of comics and graphic novels specifically aimed towards YA and tween girls, this seems really stupid. They've got a much larger female fan base coming up (or already here) than in decades past -- why negate all the positive messaging that's out there now with a sudden reversal in women's roles?

I'd love to see some great Marvel heroines own a series like the boys do, and I love some romance as much as the next gal, but if the story is diminished so that love and shoes are the main focus... Ew.

The good news is that with an ever-increasing female demographic, the need for quality girl-focused comics will grow... and less of them will fall for any blatant misogyny when they grew up on the good stuff. That doesn't help the adult women out there that would love to see quality, female-led comics, but it does lend hope to the future. And that future? ...maybe Marvel won't be a part of it.

I whole heartedly agree....quick suggestion to everyone though. Don't "buy" the book, because in his limited corporate mind, this is deemed success. Get it off of "Bit Torrent", borrow the book, or read it in the shop....then if it's good, buy it. It's this kind of philosphy that could get us some better comics across the board!
