Smoke Signals
UP IN SMOKE
So today is my quit date. I’ve been smoking for 16 years now and it’s far past my time to quit. I went for a complete physical and blood-work last Monday, and my physician put me on Chantix (yes, I actually allowed someone to stick me with a needle without being arrested for my reaction. I have Jack to thank for that, actually. It helps when you have someone holding your hand… or leg… or on the gurney so you don’t spaz out… You know, whatever). If you were around for any of the previous attempts to quit, I’m sorry. You may want to pass along survival tips to those folks who are new ’round these parts. In all seriousness, It’s actually going well. That’s not to say it isn’t hard, but it isn’t as hard as it was before. Maybe that’s because of the Chantix, or maybe it’s because I’m really ready to quit this time. With all the heart and health problems that run in my family (particularly the women) it’s far past my time to quit. So if I’m more irritable, angry, and venomous than usual, you know why. I also may be slightly more emotionally volatile. Check that… I am. But I knew that was going to happen, and the doctor said to give my body some time to acclimate to the medication, and if it doesn’t ease up after 2-3 weeks, then I need to reconsider the medication plan. Sounds like good advice to me. Wish me luck!
UFC 100 THOUGHTS
Brock Lesnar is an ass. His behavior after the fight was unsportsmanlike and disgusting, and his comments were equally abrasive. To parade around the octagon with both middle fingers extended to the fans booing you and your attitude is bad enough, but to then berate Bud Lite because they are a UFC sponsor, but won’t pay you? When you act like that?! And then to add that you might even “get on top of” your wife? That’s nice, Brock.
Here’s the thing…
The after-the-fact right hand that Dan Henderson smashed in to an unconscious Bisping was far worse than Brock Lesnar’s arrogance. Dan Henderson could have done serious damage to Bisping, and then he admitted that he knew he was out cold, and that it “felt good”? What?! The UFC won’t turn in to the WWE, and all the commentaries raising the alarm of fear are being dramatic for the sake of publicity. Lesnar is a former NCAA wrestler. He had a brief career in the NFL. He’s had a career in the WWE, and now he’s a member of the UFC. The reality is that he was accustomed to being the “Heel” and “acting” as much as the fans could take. The problem is that the UFC is real. If you can’t fight, you get hurt. Badly. Even if you can, sometimes you get hurt. Badly. Ask Frank Mir how he feels today, and go ask Bisping if he even knows what year it is. The showboating won’t last. The danger will, and when reporters focus on Lesnar more than the dangerous behavior of a former champion Henderson, there’s a problem. It’s not Lesnar’s behavior that needs to be addressed by Dana White after the fight (though he most certainly needed to address it, and he did. Lesnar actually apologized with a Bud Lite in his hand in a post-fight press conference), it’s Henderson’s careless, unnecessary behavior that needs to be stopped. The showboating will dissipate on its own, but unless it’s addressed, the reckless acts could end the sport.
WIZARD IS ABOUT TO GET A PHONE CALL
It’s now July 13th, and I want to know where my Issue #1 of Marvel Divas is. If I have to go purchase it on my own, they’re getting a bill for my second copy. I’ll never go through them again. And they’re supposed to be one of the best providers! Gods help them if my Wonder Woman or Blackest Night comics are late…
SPEAKING OF COMICS
I started reading Secret Six this past week and instantly fell in love with the story line, the writing (it’s Gail Simone, of course I love it), and the art. I’ll be ordering the rest of the issues ASAP…. and NOT from Wizard!
Now if you’ll excuse me… I need to go find a one pound bag of licorice….
