Return of the Friday 5!

   Posted by: Dawn Tags:

That’s right, it’s the return of the Friday 5!  I’m knocking the dust off of my blogging habits, and this is as good a reason as any.  Don’t forget to play along on your own blog/site and let me know if you do.  As always, you can get each week’s set of questions over at Friday5.org.

1.  On May First, 1738, King Kamehameha I was born. What are your impressions of Hawaii?
This question is funny for a number of reasons—the primary one being that Jack and I have been arguing about moving to Hawaii.  He’s pro Hawaii and living on an island, I’m all for living on an island without massive volcanoes.  Call me crazy, but with my luck one of those “sleeping” volcanoes would decide to wake up right under us!  But I can’t argue the fact that it’s beautiful there, which, in itself, is a good reason to move there.  I just don’t like that it’s so far away and that everything is so much more expensive there.  I’m trying to convince him that the Virgin Islands are a better choice.  So they have hurricanes… minor detail.

2.  On May First, 1873, Dr. David Livingstone died. When did you last presume something erroneous about someone or something?
Hmm.  Well, I try to not presume, but we all do it.  That’s what stereotypes are—assumptions about individuals without having all the facts.  I’ve come to learn that more often than not, those assumptions are wrong.  I have also learned that instinct is not to be ignored or denied, and that if you (well, I) have an inkling about someone/something, it usually ends up being right.  This doesn’t work when people change their patterned behavior, though.  My parents are a perfect example of this.

3.  On May First, 1876, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro debuted. How do you feel about Disney’s animated classic Pinocchio?
I’m not really a fan.  Okay, not at all a fan.  Growing up I wanted princess stories, not stories about little wooden boys who wanted to be real.  Maybe I should give it another shot.

4.  May First is Walpurgis Night in Sweden and other parts of northern Europe. When did you last sing in front of an audience?
Uhm… I do believe that the last time you would have caught me singing in public in front of an audience was in graduate school at a local bar.  My entourage went out for a karaoke night, and only after a considerable amount of prodding and Malibu & Cokes did I get up and sing Reba McEntire’s “Fancy.”  I still have nightmares about it.

5.  Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are a punk rock cover band. What song’s cover version do you like better than its original version?
Well, pretty much anything that Michael Buble covers I love.  I love his covers of “Save the Last Dance for Me” and “Feelin’ Good.”

Oh, and Happy May!  Spring is finally here and though my allergies disagree, I can’t wait…

Friday 5: Last but not least…

   Posted by: Dawn Tags: , , ,

Look for a RetConned Homework assignment for this week later today or tomorrow.  I miss the Homework and I know you do to.

Now, to the Friday 5!

1.  When did you last have a mid-day nap?  I do believe it was on Sunday.  The Thanksgiving holiday weekend was busy with family and friends (Don’t worry, there were naps involved, too), but by Sunday I was spent.

2.  When did you last have milk and cookies?   We discovered over the holiday, that I may or may not be lactose intolerant (well, cheese intolerance, really), so not recently.  I had a ton of cookies and delicious cookie dough while baking, but no milk, sadly.

3.  When did you last have a bubble bath?  That would be…. last Tuesday.  :)

4.  When did you last jump on the furniture?  I am assuming you mean jump on furniture like an overly rambunctious kid.  That would have to be…. when I was a kid…

5.  When did you last play in the mud?  Well, it was kinda muddy out on Saturday when we went to play in the Inaugural Yinz Team Flackle Football Turkey Bowl (The debate rages on whether it should be considered the 1st annual, or the inaugural.  As long as we do it again, I don’t much care!).  I managed to stay mud-less, but plenty of others were caught rolling around.  As always, hanging out with YinzTeam was a wonderful time (And thanks to UncleCrappy and Mrs. Crappy for the delish food and hospitality!!).

Oh, there will be more Yinz Team madness to come, I’m quite sure.  Someone really ought to create a website to document our insane exploits… Then again, maybe the fact that we all write about it anyway is unique…

A website could still be cool…. Just sayin’, yo…

Friday 5: How?

   Posted by: Dawn Tags: ,

It’s that time again… Friday 5!  I don’t know why, but this week’s list of questions made me laugh… Jump in and add your own.  Enjoy!

1.  How’s your health?  Have you met me?

2.  How was your day?  Again, have you met me??  Actually it hasn’t been bad aside from the snow, migraine, and strong desire to curl up on my couch with a blanket and tea and sleep.  After the tea of course.  With tea would be messy.

3.  How’s the weather?  Really, I thought you knew me. If you’re not going to pay attention I don’t know if I should bother anymore. How’s the weather?  It’s snowing.  Snow = Evil.  Snow = I hate being cold and outside and getting snow up my sleeves or in my shoes.  I may have been born here, but my body is a southerner. This weather is absurd.  I miss Tuscaloosa.

4.  How do you expect to get anywhere in life with an attitude like that?   Hey! Don’t you sass me!  I’m  the Social Media Sass MouthMiss Sass Mouth, to you…

5.  How many people made you smile today?   Exactly two.

Friday 5: Stuck in the Middle with You…

Posted by: Dawn Tags: , ,

It’s Friday.  Again.  THANK GOD!

That means it’s time for Friday 5!  I haven’t been participating in the Friday 5 for a while, but there was a lot going on.  You know, Podcamp, illnesses, drama, elections, you know… the norm.  So, in keeping with the NaBloPoMo spirit, here it is!  You can find the original prompt at Friday 5!

1.  What usually marks the middle of your day?  Uh… Lunch.  That’s pretty standard, I would think.  Or isn’t it?  Am I missing something?  What’s going on, please?

2.  From whom (or to whom) was your most recent middle-of-the-night phone call?   Ha.  You’d love to know, wouldn’t you?  Wouldn’t you….

3.  On what social, political, economic, or moral issue are you in the middle of the road?  I am not middle of the road about anything, really.  I have my opinions, I look at issues and evaluate them based on the facts, and what side of the argument/issue/crisis/debate I think is most logical and fair to those involved, and I choose to defend it.  That’s the problem with being able to see multiple sides to most conflicts/arguments.  I’m all about finality and decisions, and I don’t really understand how people can waiver or be “middle of the road.”

4.  How likely are you to give someone your middle finger?  Not likely.  As Mah Daddy used to say (hell, still says), “You went to school for most of your life, and you can’t come up with a better way to express yourself than through vulgarity?”  Flipping someone off always seemed… childish and unladylike.  That’s just me though.

5.  When were you last caught in the middle of a disagreement that really had nothing to do with you?  Really?  Really?!  How about all of 2008?  Yeah, that sounds about right.  If it wasn’t one thing, it was another.  Whether it’s someone throwing blame around without taking any of it, or someone calling me every night to try and “persuade” me that a third person is wrong about an issue I have nothing to do with, and couldn’t care less about, I tend to get dragged into things pretty quickly.  What have I learned, boys and girls?  The drama of others can only affect you if you allow it.
